Widows Jewelry Project

Our dream of a self-sustaining, autonomous Mafubira emerging in the future begins with caring for its widows and orphans, today. The majority of widows in Uganda lost their husbands to AIDS, which means they’ve also lost a significant source of income. Many widows themselves are HIV positive or already diagnosed with full-blown AIDS. In the village of Mafubira, it is not uncommon for widows to care for at least four children or orphans at a time. In carrying on with the original vision of STAO, the Widows Jewelry Project seeks to empower the widows of Mafubira with skills that will help them adequately support themselves and their children.

When you choose to purchase a piece of jewelry from the Widows Jewelry Project, you directly help the people of Mafubira by contributing to the purchase of sewing machines, goats, gardening plots, and other equipment that will allow local widows the resources necessary to make for themselves a living wage. Money from sales will also provide immediate relief to the widows by ensuring they have the necessary immediate income to meet their children’s basic needs. Ultimately, the widows will be lifted up above the cycles of disease and poverty by the resilient effort of their own hands.
