Why do I want to help?
These children of Uganda who are beaten, abandoned, and constantly fearing death somehow still finding resilience in their given circumstances, humble me tremendously. More importantly, it gives me hope. Possibly more hope than I myself may ever be able to give them. My desire for these children is that they could experience their childhood and life to the fullest without fear and abandonment but with hope and love in Christ.
During my internship at World Vision this past summer, I went through a phase of frustration and confusion, as I struggled to feel compassion for people who are hurting around the world. All the statistics were nothing but numbers to me. This led me to pray for God to break my heart for me to feel something, anything. Then about 4 weeks into the internship, I had an opportunity to hear a testimony from Grace Akallo (formerly abducted LRA child soldier) during a chapel meeting. At the end of her testimony, I was in tears. I was tremendously moved by her testimony, but more so I was overwhelmed by how God broke my heart.
Since then, God has slowly but surely been softening my heart. I believe I’ve been undeservingly blessed with much privileges and opportunities in my life not to hoard for self-sufficiency but rather to utilize them to partake in God’s work in areas where overwhelming pain and suffering exist this very moment.
I am not sure where this journey with Tusubira will take me, but I know that I have been given this tremendous opportunity and a burden to serve and make a difference. I am excited to be a part of this movement and I pray that God will continue to humble us, grow us, and teach us through these children in Uganda.
